Dental insurance is used to help offset the costs associated with dental care. Dental costs can vary greatly as it can cost as little as $300 for regular dental hygiene to $25,000 for cosmetic dentistry. It is important you understand exactly what your plan covers, as some dental procedures are not necessarily included in dental plans. Cosmetic dental procedures are not typically covered by dental insurance, however, if you are undergoing something like a smile makeover that will involve multiple necessary treatments as prerequisites (e.g., root canals or bite adjustments), some of those costs may be covered by insurance. The most common dental plans are PPO’s or preferred provider organization. PPO dental plans are limited to a group of dentists who are available to provide dental care at a reduced cost. PPO’s are not the only option, though, as indemnity plans and capitation plans are also popular. Indemnity plans allow you to choose your own dentist and pay a flat-fee for each dental visit, but you have an annual limit on coverage for dental spending. Capitation plans designate specific dentists for intervals of treatment. These dentists have a contract indicating that they will be paid a fee regardless of whether dental treatment was required. Whatever type of dental plan you choose, make sure you review all of your options to choose the plan that best suits your needs.
